Mother Mary VeronicaFOUNDER OF THE APOSTOLIC CARMEL (1823 - 1906) The seed of the Apostolic Carmel was sown in the heart of this woman who realized the greatness of the Mission. She came to India in 1861,and worked with zeal and enthusiasm, especially in the field of education. At present our educational institutions have spread over the length and breadth of India and Sri Lanka reaching even to Pakistan, Kuwait, Kenya, Rome and Bahrain. The work begun by Mother Veronica rooted in the contemplative spirit of Carmel is kept alive in the active Apostolate of Education. Hers was a pedagogy of love giving each child the taste of going beyond self and making a reality of the dream which God has for each one of His children. EARLY BEGINNINGS It was a time when the world was facing the turmoils of World War II. Jamshedpur was considered a war zone. At such a time, the Sisters of the Apostolic Carmel started a Convent School in the Steel City. On the fourteenth of January 1945, Rev. Mother Josephine, the then Superior General and Mother Theodosia, Principal of Patna Womens College met Mr. J.R.D. Tata (Chairman Tata Iron and Steel Company) Sir Ardeshir Dalal (Special Director) and Sir J.J. Ghandy (Resident Director). This was to prove a historic meeting. When the TATA Company Management requested the Bishop to open Sacred Heart School in Jamshedpur, prominent Catholics of Jamshedpur Mr. John DCosta, Mr. Jerry Rebello and others supported the idea of inviting the Apostolic Carmel Sisters. Archbishop Ferdenand Perier S.J. of Calcutta gave his consent and blessed the enterprise. The first batch of Sisters arrived on January 14th, 1945 with Mother Cleopha. By 1951 the New School building was almost completed and today we have the magnificent Convent School Building. From humble improvised classes to the present building with 2300 students on roll, we bow our heads in thanksgiving to the Almighty and also to the numerous citizens of the Steel City. Over the last Sixty Years, every student who has passed out of this Institution is not merely an example of what she has inherited from her family but also of what the School has made of her! Writups are given in this site.
